This 1976 Rover P6 2200 SC, which is being offered at No Reserve, was first registered on 1 January 1976. Finished in bright white, the bodywork presents in an honest fashion, and is set off by multispoke alloy wheels with Rover ‘viking’ logo centre caps (a spare wheel is included too). The originality extends to the number plates, while the tinted glass is marked with the ‘MEH177P’ registration. AA and RAC grille badges add a period touch. This Rover P6 also has a vinyl roof and a sunroof.
‘MEH177P’ has an odometer reading around 81,800 miles. The interior combines the 2200 SC ‘strip’ speedometer with a central round rev counter, and it also has a period medium and long wave radio. There’s an auxiliary switch for the Kenlowe engine fan. The ‘boxpleat’ seats, with clever cooling grooves, present very well, and the dark wood veneer stretches from the dashboard into the doors. The 2.2-litre single carburettor engine is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, and the new owner will appreciate the extra torque of the enlarged 2.2-litre engine, helping make this classic Rover, which is offered at No Reserve, a very usable classic today.
The Rover P6 was a classy, high-quality executive car produced between 1963 and 1977. An innovative, groundbreaking model, it effectively established the ‘junior executive’ sector today dominated by the BMW 3 Series. The Rover 2000 was the very first winner of the European Car of the Year Award, and scooped other awards for its various safety features. The iconic David Bach-styled unibody design, with non-stressed panels bolted to a unit frame, was inspired by the Citroen DS. It had advanced de Dion tube rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The Mark II Rover P6 arrived in 1970, with gently updated exterior styling and an updated interior. The larger 2200 engine arrived in 1973. The Rover P6 continued for a while after the launch of its successor, the Rover SD1, with the final model produced in March 1977.
