Registration - M440 SGW
Chassis No. - WBAEF62000CB97481
M.O.T. - February 2025
Odometer - 170,000
Although the BMW 8 Series nominally replaced the 6 Series in 1990 it was conceived in a different, higher, more expensive class altogether. In 1995 ‘M440SGW’ (the dateless registration pictured is being retained by the current owner) would have cost around £54,500 or almost the same as a 911 Carrera of the same vintage. ‘M440SGW’ has been well used and, likely, much enjoyed by 6 keepers to date with 181,039 miles recorded on the digital odometer. The current keeper acquired ‘M440SGW’ in March 2009 at around 138,000 miles. The earlier iteration of 840Ci with the M60, 4-litre V8 engine, ‘M440SGW’ comes with a full BMW service history up to 110,000 miles in March 2005. The current owner reports having serviced it every year in his ownership but retains no records of this work. Complete with original book pack, spare wheel, toolkit and contemporary Bluetooth head unit, ‘M440SGW’ holds a valid MOT until February 2025.
The BMW 8 Series was the ultimate autobahn stormer of the 1990’s. Designed by early CAD technology and boasting an unbelievably low 0.29 cd drag coefficient, the 8 Series was the first BMW to have, or need, an electronically limited 155mph top speed. This sleek example finished in Arctic Silver is in admirably original condition, showcasing those wind cheating, briefcase sized pop up headlamps and the original style 32, 15-spoke, 17 inch alloy wheels. The stylish cabin is trimmed in grey leather and complementary shades for carpets. In its day ‘M440SGW’ represented the cutting edge of Bavarian expresses. Dual zone climate control, trip computer and five speed automatic gearbox were all rarely seen innovations for the time.
The condition of ‘M440SGW’ underlines the quality and integrity of the 840’s design and build. Despite its mileage the levels of wear and tear appear moderate. Some inevitable, but minor battle scars are noted externally, as are some areas of obvious use related patina in the cabin. It all appears relatively superficial, however.
