March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 50

1999 Porsche 911 GT3
Rare Zanzibar red with only 51,000 miles recorded

Registration - V384 KOF

Chassis No. - WPOZZZ99ZYS690562

M.O.T. - April 2023

Odometer - 51,715

Well here’s a head-turner for you – an early 996 GT3 finished in Zanzibar Red that’s complemented by black Alcantara trim and black-centred split-rim BBS alloy wheels - the vendor informs us that it is one of only nine righthand drive examples finished in this most eye-catching of colours. The motorsport theme continues inside courtesy of a roll cage, carbon-backed bucket seats, Scroth six-point harnesses and an Alcantara-covered Momo steering wheel. VDI trade check shows the current keeper to have acquired the Porsche in 2014 and to be its 12th owner to date. It also notes that the car was declared a Category C write-off in 2007 and the car is priced accordingly, making it a very affordable entry into the rarefied world of performance Porsches. It is now offered complete with a Sony CD/radio, spare key, selection of bills and booklets, and a service book stamped up to 49,864 miles (the odometer currently stands at 51,715 miles).

The MKI version of Porsche’s 996 GT3 was introduced in 1999 in order to homologate the latest version of the 911 for use in the FIA GT3 Cup. It featured the bodyshell of the Carrera 4 lightened by the removal of any unnecessary equipment (eg rear seats, sound deadening, sunroof, air conditioning etc), and to optimise its trackday credentials it featured enlarged brakes, a lowered retuned suspension system, lighter wheels and redesigned front bumper and rear spoiler aimed at increasing down force and thereby grip. The power output of the normally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six engine was a healthy 355bhp. The unit was linked to a six-speed manual gearbox with the option of interchangeable ratios. Production of the MKI lasted for three years, but was limited to just 1,868 cars. The performance was brisk with a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds and top speed of just under 190mph.

In summary:

  • A very attractive, well-equipped example of a desirable breed
  • Said to one of only nine RHD GT3s finished in Zanzibar Red
  • Recorded as a Category C, but priced accordingly
