Lot 51

1978 Jaguar XJS V12
***NO RESERVE*** A rare, pre-HE model, complete with Leyland Cars Passport to Service booklet and original book pack

Registration - EGK 234T

Chassis No. - 2W-4784BW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 40,315

A highly desirable model with an equally desirable engine, this example of Jaguar’s XJ-S coupe is a rare pre-HE model, and offered at no reserve. Fitted with Jaguar’s famous 5.3-litre V12 engine, ‘EGK 234T’ uses a four-speed automatic transmission, and is presented in silver, with black leather interior. Featuring a 2+2 interior, the cabin is trimmed with chrome details across the dashboard and centre console, while the exterior includes those glorious flying buttresses at the rear, and the unfussy styling elements found on pre-HE models.

Offered with a comprehensive folder of paperwork, documentation shows that ‘EGK 234T’ was originally supplied by University Motors of Kingston upon Thames, and from 1978 had a Leyland Cars Passport to Service booklet, with service stamps from Guy Salmon in Surrey from 1978 until 19,579 miles; further services were carried out at University Motors. Included in the sale is the original book pack, and additional documentation covering maintenance records. With a low indicated mileage of 40,315 miles, this Jaguar XJ-S is described as in ‘average’ condition by the vendor in terms of bodywork, electrics, paint, and interior. However, the engine and transmission are rated ‘good’, though at the time of entry into the sale, there is a blowing exhaust, power steering failure, and a water light on. Every attempt will be made prior to auction to get the Jaguar into better running order, though this cannot be guaranteed.

  • Offered at no reserve
  • Rare pre-HE example of Jaguar’s V12
  • Extensive paperwork documenting its history

First outlined by Malcom Sayer - the designer whose portfolio also includes this car’s predecessor, the E-Type - the Jaguar XJ-S was noted for its prominent rear buttresses. Sayer rather unfortunately died in 1970 before the design was finalised, and although initial reactions were mixed when the car was unveiled in 1975, it’s fair to say that time has been kind to it, with good examples now keenly sought after. Under Ford’s ownership, the hyphen disappeared from the nameplate, and the facelift XJS debuted in 1991 with a number of subtle design changes, including more aerodynamic bumpers and revised rear window trim. At launch, the XJ-S was only offered with Jaguar’s 5.2-litre V12, but over the years this was replaced with the HE (High-Efficiency) V12, and the addition of a 3.6-litre straight-six. The original coupe model was also joined by the option of a targa, and then a full convertible in later years. Production lasted until 1996, when Jaguar replaced the XJS with the XK8.
