1966 Triumph Herald 1200

Registration - PJH 836D

Chassis No. - GA207435DL

M.O.T. - August 2021

Odometer - 109,800

Anybody seeking a Herald needs to be made aware of this lot – a genuine three-owner saloon that was the subject of a comprehensive restoration back in 1982 and, according to the vendor, ‘still looks as good today, such being the quality of the workmanship carried out’. Apparently the first keeper retained ‘PJH 836D’ for no less than 44 years, while the second hung on to it for 10. The current owner regards the car as ‘fantastic inside outside and underneath, with no rust whatsoever’. And adds, ‘there are just a few paint touch-ins, but nothing that distracts from the amazing condition of this 55-year old Triumph’. The Herald currently indicates a total mileage of 109,800 and is now being offered complete with a full stainless steel exhaust system, radio, auxiliary oil pressure/water temperature gauge, original bill of sale and a current MOT that’s valid until August 30 this year.

Standard-Triumph launched the Herald in 1959 as a replacement for its ageing Standard 8/10 models. It bucked the trend towards monocoque construction by featuring a separate chassis to which the main tub was bolted. The one-piece front end folded forwards to provide optimum access to the engine and suspension, while all outer panels – including the roof – could be unbolted for easy repair. The Herald 1200 appeared in April 1961 and brought with it a rise in engine capacity from 948 to 1147cc, as well as a wooden laminate facia and improved seating. The model’s design made for the ready adoption of alternative body styles and saloon, coupe, convertible, estate and van derivatives were all offered during the model’s 12-year reign, over which production numbers exceeded 300,000.

In summary:

  • A very tidy example throughout
  • The subject of a comprehensive restoration in 1962
  • Just three keepers from new
