The Bolesworth Castle September 2024 Classic, Performance & Supercar Auction

Lot 54

1935 Alvis Silver Eagle
Coachwork by Cross & Ellis of Coventry, just six owners from new and believed to be the sole remaining of two built

Registration - NFO 629

Chassis No. - 12660

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 55,500

Gloriously presented in two-tone grey, this example of Alvis’ Silver Eagle is fitted with a two-door, fixed head coupe body from Coventry coachbuilder Cross & Ellis. Powered by a 2.4-litre straight six engine, and fitted to a full syncro four-speed manual gearbox, ‘NFO 629’ features a four-seater interior, with the coachwork including rear-mounted sunroof and hinged windscreen.

The original maroon leather upholstery retains the patina of almost 90 years on the road, but is in good overall condition, from the restored wood veneer covering the dashboard and tops of the doors, to the plush burgundy carpets. ‘NFO 629’ was underwent renovation from 2012, which included an extensive engine rebuild in 2017 at a cost of around £20,000, and bodywork stripped down, repainted, and roof restored. Recent expenditure has also included work on the radiator, brakes, and wheels. The mileage is reported by the vendor as being 55,500 miles, though because of the engine rebuild, the odometer displays almost 11,500 miles. Reputed to be the only surviving model of its type built by Cross & Ellis, and only one of two built initially, this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain an incredibly rare, beautiful, and desirable pre-war Alvis.

  • Coachbuilt Alvis with fewer than 60,000 miles covered
  • Exceptionally rare hard-top coupe model
  • Restored paintwork with original interior

Having been founded in Coventry in 1919, The Alvis Car And Engineering Company, not only built cars, but also armoured cars and tanks, and aircraft engines – the latter far longer than car production lasted in fact. In 1965, Alvis as a car making concern was acquired by Rover, but the military aspects of its operations continued until 2004, when it became part of BAE Systems. Now, the rights have been bought, and The Alvis Car Company is building a limited number of continuation specials. Alvis’ Silver Eagle started production as the prosaically titled 14.75 Six in 1927, with the more evocative name appearing two years later. Well regarded at the time, Alvis, like many manufacturers of the period, did not build bodies for their models, instead relying on customers to specify their demands to coachbuilders – including particularly strong ties with Cross & Ellis. More than 2,600 Silver Eagle models were produced, until production ceased in 1936.
