An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

Lot 54

1961 Austin Cambridge MKII
Believed to have covered a credible 33,000 miles from new.

Registration - 586 UYR

Chassis No. - AHS8123679

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 33,974

‘586 UYR’ was first registered in May 1961. A tidy and original-looking example of a now pretty rare model, it features grey bodywork teamed with grey vinyl interior trim. The Austin has recently been treated to a replacement carpet set, new base for the driver’s seat and four fresh tyres. The vendor informs us that it ‘starts and drives well and is very reliable, even in the winter months’. He presently considers the B Series engine and four-speed manual transmission to be in ‘excellent’ order and classes the four-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘average’. He is now selling the Cambridge complete with a selection of invoices, while the odometer currently registers a very modest though credible total mileage from new of 33,974.

Austin employed the Cambridge moniker for its mid-sized passenger car range from 1954 through to 1969. The line began with the A40 and A50 –monocoque-bodied, four–door saloons with independent front suspension that jointly served as a replacement for the A40 Somerset, and were powered by 1.2-litre (A40) or 1.5-litre (A50) versions of the BMC B Series engine respectively. The A50 gave way to the A55 in 1957. Though propelled by the same B Series unit, it was now blessed with a higher compression ratio. The body had been restyled too, endowing the model with a bigger boot and larger rear window. It has also been lowered courtesy of 13-inch diameter wheels and a two-tone paint finish was a popular new option. It was in 1959 that the A55 MKII made its debut. Known as the first of the Farina models due to the restyling carried out by Italian maestro Pininfarina, it remained largely unchanged mechanically. A 1959 example tested by Motor magazine achieved the 0-60mph dash in 24.5 seconds and a top speed of 75.5 mph. The A55 gave way to the A60 in 1961.

In summary:

  • A tidy example of an increasingly rare model
  • Seemingly just six keepers and 33,974 miles from new
  • Recently treated to new tyres and carpets
