The P6 was ahead of it time, and the remaining examples of the breed are increasingly prized by the classic car fraternity. This 2.0-litre example appears to be very much to original specification, right down to its period correct stainless steel hubcaps. Its grey paintwork is matched to beige/grey leather interior trim, and the vendor presently regards its four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘average’ condition. The stately Rover is now being sold complete with auxiliary front lights, tow hook, Clarion radio/cassette player, workshop manual and a current MOT certificate valid into May 2024. All told, an apparently very usable entrée into the classic car world, that could be used exactly as it is or restored to as-new condition. The presently indicated total mileage of 84,000 appears to be supported by the Rover’s MOT history.
Designed in-house by Spen King, David Bache and Gordon Bashford, the P6 bristled with innovation and was rightly the winner of the first ever European Car of the Year Award. Its monocoque shell featured bolt-on panels, braking was by discs all-round and the steering by Marles worm and roller, while the fully independent suspension comprised a novel de Dion arrangement at the rear and an equally unique rocker system operating horizontally-mounted coil springs at the front. The car was initially powered by a 1978cc (hence the 2000 name) OHC in-line four-cylinder unit of 90bhp. Some 322,302 P6 Rovers of varying engine capacity were produced before the range was superseded by the SD1 in 1977.
