May 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 55

Lot 55 - 1972 Jensen Interceptor III

1972 Jensen Interceptor III
Documented 54,000 miles, in recent ownership for forty years

Registration - DRJ 349L

Chassis No. - 1284853

M.O.T. - October 2022

Odometer - 54,355

Few cars of any era can match an Interceptor for sheer visual impact and this particular MKIII model oozes charisma in spades. A five owner example, it has remained with its current keeper for no less than the last 40 years and was apparently the subject of a professional restoration 15 years ago, since when it has been restricted to dry weather motoring. Evidently the Jensen’s history file confirms the currently indicated total mileage of just 54,355 to be correct - the car certainly looks in remarkably fine fettle for one currently celebrating its fiftieth birthday. The vendor confirms that it is ‘free of corrosion and that the underneath is in remarkable condition’. Recent maintenance has included the installation of a new battery and an electric-choked Edelbrock carburettor, plus an overhaul of the brake system during which the front calipers and flexi hoses were renewed. He currently classes the ‘sweet sounding’ V8 engine, ‘smooth changing’ automatic transmission and black leather interior as being in ‘excellent’ order, and the bodywork and red paintwork as ‘good’. He adds that the alloy wheels are original and shod with matching tyres on which there is still ample tread. He is now offering ‘DRJ 349L’ complete with stainless steel exhaust system, Moto-Lita leather-bound steering wheel, period Pioneer radio/cassette, and a box file full of history including lots of invoices and every past MOT, plus a current one valid into October this year. A truly lovely, original example.

Introduced at the October 1971 Earl's Court Motor Show, the Interceptor III was visually distinguished by cast headlight surrounds, GKN alloy wheels and a comprehensively revamped interior. By May 1972 the engines on RHD cars had been increased in capacity to a whopping 7,212cc. A distinctive looking Grand Tourer, Interceptors were bought by celebrities as diverse as Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, British Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington and World Motorcycle Champion Phil Read.

In summary:

  • Just five owners and 54,355 warranted miles from new
  • The subject of a quality restoration 15 years ago
  • A clearly fine example that comes with large history file
