‘VRL 426S’ has been in the vendor’s care for about three years, during which time it has seen only occasional use and been garaged throughout. Being a mechanic, he has nevertheless treated the bike to regular maintenance using nothing but original parts, and recently treated it to a new fuel hose and filter. He informs us that the Kwacker ‘runs well’, and presently grades its engine and four-speed gearbox as ‘excellent’ and the cycle parts and paintwork as ‘good’. He believes the indicated mileage of 5,000 to be commensurate with the bike’s condition and is offering it for sale with No Reserve.
Making its debut in the early months of 1978, the KL was Kawasaki’s first attempt at producing a dual-purpose bike, though much of the machine was based on its KZ200 model. It was powered by an air-cooled single-cylinder SOHC four-stroke engine of 246cc with an output of 21bhp – sufficient for 60mph cruising on the road and more than enough for some cross country fun. The unit drove through a five-speed gearbox, while braking was by drums front and rear. On testing a KL250 the winner of over 1,300 trials events, Sammy Miller MBE, concluded: “The motor’s responsive, the bike is well balanced and the suspension is good. There’s not a great deal to fault, and I think overall it’s quite a neat package.”
