November 2021 Classics Auction

Lot 60

1971 Bentley T1 Saloon
Only 37,949 miles

Registration - RYY 240K

Chassis No. - SBH11978

M.O.T. - October 2022

Odometer - 37,949

This magnificently-presented apparently low mileage T1 saloon is finished in the most pleasing combination of dark over light metallic green and trimmed in green Connolly hide. It has had just three owners to date, the most recent of whom retained the car for no less than 30 years, during which time he had it fully restored. The sills have only recently been replaced and throughout his tenure ‘RYY 240K’ was serviced annually and maintained as required by Bentley marque specialists. The vendor describes the Bentley as being ‘in magnificent condition and a wonderful car to drive and own’, and presently grades the bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the V8 engine, automatic transmission and sumptuous upholstery as ‘good’. The T1 is now being offered complete with Lucas spot lamps, period push-button radio/cassette, full service history and a current MOT valid to October 5 next year.

By 1965, Rolls-Royce was well-practised in the art of badge engineering and, while the new T Series Bentley was aimed at the world’s many devotees of the ‘Flying B’ logo, it was essentially a re-badged version of the Silver Shadow. Its arrival was none too soon however and, together with the Shadow, did much to reverse the notion that Rolls-Royce was falling behind the times. It certainly resulted in many firsts for the company, including: unitary construction rather than separate body/chassis units, disc rather than drum brakes and independent rear suspension. At launch it was powered by a 172bhp V8 engine of 6230cc, though this was enlarged to 6750cc during 1970. Early cars employed the same GM automatic transmission as the S3. A Mulliner Park Ward-bodied convertible version of the T1 was offered from 1967 to 1971.

In summary:

  • A beautifully-presented example
  • Apparently just three owners and 37,949 miles from new
  • The subject of a rolling restoration
