This truly gorgeous lefthand drive pillarless coupe was part of the famous Kemp Auto Museum of ‘Mercedes And Other Fine Motor Cars’, that was sited in St Louis, USA before it closed down. The vendor considers the Benz’s bodywork and chrome (of which there is a great deal) to be ‘in outstanding condition’ and the Ivory White bodywork and red leather interior to be ‘excellent’. The car is notable for its very rare optional rear ‘opera seats’ (ie a pair of fully shaped individual chairs as opposed to the more usual two or three-seat bench). Recent maintenance has included the replacement of the front brake discs, calipers and dampers, as well as the spark plugs, HT leads and distributor cap. Apparently when the museum closed, the history of the many vehicles that were sold was mislaid. However, the vendor does have photos of the vehicle on display in the premises and has been in contact with a former museum employee regarding its history. He also has a matching numbers certificate courtesy of Daimler AG. He confirms that ‘498 UYS’ ‘starts, runs, steers and stops’ and is satisfied it would ‘pass any test drive’. He is now selling it complete with its original Becker radio.

Introduced in mid-1959, the Mercedes-Benz W111 Series was a natural progression from the 220 Ponton. The new models were bigger inside and out and sported a greater abundance of brightwork; not to mention the finned rear wings which spawned the model’s ‘fintail’ nickname.

In addition to the four-door saloon, the range comprised an elegant two-door cabriolet and coupe. The cars were very well appointed inside, being adorned with Mercedes textured leather and wood trimmings.

In summary:

  • Formerly part of the specialist American Kemp Museum
  • A clearly fine example of a much-admired model
  • Features rare rear ‘opera seats’
