Finished in the desirable colour combination of white with matching white interior, and bearing the marque-related registration G18 VWG, this Karmann Clipper ticks all the right boxes for open-top GTI motoring. The vendor informs us the car has been in their care since 2020 and has clearly been well cherished throughout its life.
Subject to a comprehensive renovation in 2015, with supporting paperwork present, the car also benefits from substantial service history dating back to 1989. Tasteful upgrades include a Karmann bodykit (optional upgrade), Wolfsburg steering wheel, Bluetooth-enabled stereo with upgraded sound system and subwoofer, a smart alarm and immobiliser, and a set of period-style BBS alloy wheels. Notably, the car is accompanied by a letter from Volkswagen confirming that the engine is the original unit fitted at the factory, further reinforcing its provenance.
The Golf comes complete with a plethora of paperwork, the original instruction manual, and its factory hood cover, which is said to be in excellent condition. A full car cover is also included. With an MOT valid until June 2026, this well-sorted and appealing Mk1 Cabriolet is ready to enjoy.
The Mk1 Golf Cabriolet, introduced in 1979 and built by Karmann, combined Volkswagen’s sharp dynamics with open-air motoring. Marketed in various guises over its long production run, the Clipper became one of the most recognisable versions, featuring revised styling, Karmann body enhancements, and, in GTI form, spirited performance from the fuel-injected four-cylinder engine. Production ran until 1993, well after the hatchback had moved on to the Mk2 generation, cementing the Mk1 Cabriolet’s popularity as a design icon of the 1980s and early 1990s.
