Odometer - 20,540
If you’ve always fancied a four-seat 280ZX, then you may well want this one. Having formed part of a private collection, it has had just five owners from new and was recently fully recommissioned following over 20 years away from the road. That lengthy slumber would account for why the odometer currently registers a trifling 20,540 miles from new, and why the Datsun is in notably good condition for its age. Items that were replaced during the recommissioning include: the exhaust; water pipes; oil pump; drive belts; battery; tailgate struts; wheels and tyres (the original wheels are available if wanted). In addition, the fuel system was overhauled, the brake calipers all reconditioned, and the radio/cassette player repaired. The vendor now classifies the straight-six engine and automatic gearbox as ‘good to excellent’, bodywork and tan interior trim as ‘good’, and the gold paintwork ‘average to good’. ‘SFK 360W’ is being offered complete with a current MOT valid to May 25 next year.
The Datsun 280ZX (sold as the Nissan Fairlady Z in its native Japan) was unveiled in 1978 and built on the impressive reputation forged by its forbears – the 240, 260 and 280Z. The only items in common with the 280Z it replaced, however, were the 2.8-litre straight-six engine and its related driveline components. In common with its predecessor the newcomer was offered in two-seater and 2+2 configurations. Mechanical changes included the replacement of the rear Chapman struts with BMW-style semi-trailing arms and the rear brake drums with discs. There was now the option of manual rack and pinion or power-assisted recirculating ball steering. Production of the 280ZX continued into 1983, when the model was supplanted by the Nissan 300ZX.
