March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

Lot 7

1971 Rolls-Royce Corniche Saloon
Finished in Royal Navy Blue with Tobacco hide

Registration - WES 46K

Chassis No. - CRH 11279

M.O.T. - March 2023

Odometer - 139,501

This suitably statesmanlike Corniche matches Seychelles Blue coachwork and blue Everflex roof to a perfectly patinated tan hide interior, the overall effect of which is extremely pleasing to the eye and suits the car perfectly. It was first registered to a London-based keeper in October 1971, making it one of the earliest of just 1,108 saloon versions of the Corniche produced. It appears to be in very original order throughout, with its Mulliner Park Ward plaque still inset in the burr walnut facia and HJMPW (H J Mulliner Park Ward) heel mat adorning the driver’s footwell. The luxurious specification includes a Pioneer radio/cassette player, Philips graphic equalizer and pair of Lucas auxiliary driving lamps. The Rolls is now being sold complete with a number of old MOTs, plus a current one valid to March 14 next year. The indicated mileage from new currently stands at 139,703.

In common with the Shadow on which it was based, the Corniche was penned by in-house designer John Polwhele Blatchley and the underbody and floorpan crafted by Pressed Steel Fisher. Initial assembly (including alloy bonnet, bootlid and doors) was then carried out by either Mulliner Park Ward or James Young. At this stage the cars were transported to the main factory in Crewe for the installation of the running gear before returning to London for the trimming, painting and finishing. Power was provided by the company’s venerable 6.75-litre V8, whose origins could be traced back to the 1950s. This was mated to a GM Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. Suspension was independent by coil springs all round, augmented by a Citroën-originated hydraulic self-levelling system. Braking was by discs all-round. A total of just 1,108 Corniche I saloons were produced between 1971 and 1982.

In summary:

  • A very original-looking car in a notably good colour combination
  • One of only 1,108 Corniche saloons produced
  • MOT’d into March next year
