According to its official MOT records, this tidy pickup has driven less than 3,000 miles in the last 13 years, though its overall mileage is uncertain. It’s finished in green and rides on chunky steel wheels shod with a set of go-anywhere Kingpin Tracker all terrain tyres. The Landie’s inherent practicality has been augmented by the addition of chequer plate to the wing tops, sills, front bumper and load area, while its black vinyl interior has been felted for additional insulation. It is believed that at some stage the original engine has been supplanted by a later 2286cc diesel unit, and the pickup’s specification benefits greatly from the inclusion of overdrive. In recent times the brakes and track rod ends have received attention, and the vendor now regards the four-cylinder engine, manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order. The Series III is now offered complete with some original wheels, tow hook, fire extinguisher, a receipt for the recent work and some old MOTs, plus a current MOT valid to June 27, 2024.
The Series Land Rover steadily progressed from a single offering powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine to a complete family of long and short wheelbase derivatives with an ever-increasing choice of engines. By the time of the Series IIA of 1969-1971, production was at its all-time peak - over 60,000 vehicles per annum – and, in addition to record sales, the model dominated many world markets. The Series III of 1971-1985 is the most common version, of which 440,000 were produced. Outwardly it was almost identical to the IIA, aside of a plastic rather than metal radiator grille. The optional diesel engine benefited from a higher compression ratio and the gearbox from synchromesh on all ratios, while the cab featured a more modern, moulded plastic facia, and the instrument cluster was moved from its long-standing home in the centre to the driver’s side.
