November 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 70

1985 Volkswagen Golf GTi Cabriolet

Registration - B21 XYX

Chassis No. - WVWZZZ15ZFK003411

M.O.T. - March 2023

Odometer - 135,000

The vendor of this smartly-presented cabriolet informs us that it was treated to a light restoration last year, during which the paintwork was refreshed, the engine rebuilt and new brakes and exhaust system installed. At the same time, the P-slot Pirelli alloy wheels were refurbished to a high standard and shod with fresh Davanti tyres. The black hood is apparently original aside of a minor repair below the rear window, and is said to be 100 percent waterproof. The vendor presently grades the 1,781cc engine, five-speed transmission and dark metallic grey paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the bodywork and light grey interior trim as ‘good’, and adds that ‘everything electrical works as it should’. He is now offering ‘B21 XYX’ complete with full tonneau cover, new CD/radio and period speakers, and a current MOT valid to June 23 next year. The odometer currently registers 82,679 miles, but we understand the correct overall figure is 135,000, so assume a new speedometer has been installed at some stage.

Volkswagen increased the GTi’s engine capacity for the last of the MKIs from 1,588 to 1,781cc – raising the torque by 8 lb ft in the process. Along with other changes, it made for a much quicker car, knocking 1.5 seconds off the 0-60mph time. The cabriolet version first saw the light of day in 1979. It was built entirely by Karmann at Osnabrück on behalf of Volkswagen – they carried out every process from the stamping of the bodies to the final assembly. Aside of a larger fuel tank and smaller spare tyre from 1984 onwards, the specification remained unchanged until the MKI cabriolet was replaced in 1993 by one based on the Golf MKIII – there was never a cabriolet version of the MKII.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented example of a still popular model
  • Treated to a light restoration last year
  • Comes with tonneau cover and new CD/radio
