The Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC is a four/five seat coupe of real presence, and ‘H234 ABA’ certainly looks the part with its metallic blue bodywork teamed with an ivory-coloured leather interior. It has remained in its current ownership since 2018, and had just seven keepers to date. The Benz is accompanied by an extensive service history file that contains 17 stamps, then a gap while the car was off the road for a few years, followed by continuous maintenance from 2018 onwards. Recent attention has included the replacement of the windscreen and an overhaul of the braking system. The vendor presently grades the V8 engine and automatic transmission as ‘excellent’, the upholstery as ‘good to excellent’, and the paintwork and two-door bodywork as ‘good’. He is now offering the big coupe complete with colour-coordinated deep pile over-mats, factory-fitted radio/cassette player, spare key, a file containing multiple invoices and old MOTs, plus a current one valid until July 24 next year.
As the successor to the W116 range, the Bruno Sacco penned W126 Series was the second generation of flagship vehicles to bear the S-Class moniker. After six years of concentrated development, the saloon versions were launched at the 1979 Frankfurt Salon. The first of the coupe (C126) variants, the 500SEC, was unveiled at the same venue two years later. Based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell, the newcomer was equipped with all-round independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted steering. Power came from a 248bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine linked to a four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Making the most of its 0.34 drag coefficient, the luxury express could complete the 0-60mph dash in 7.5 seconds and accelerate on to 143mph. A total of some 30,184 500SECs were manufactured all told.
