This superb Lotus Cortina MkII Series 1 comes to auction from a collection, where it has been cherished and dry-stored. Fully verified by the Lotus Cortina register, complete with certification, it has a collection of paperwork including old tax discs and historic MOTs. The car passed an MOT in 2023, and recently passed again, meaning the MOT is valid until June 2026. It also has all its original hand books, and plenty of receipts showing work carried out over the years.
This 1967 car originally went to the US for the first two years of its life, returning to the UK in 1969. ‘KMJ521G was registered here on 24 February 1969 and has had just six previous UK keepers in that time. The first to fifth kept it until February 1980, with the previous keeper then owning it for an incredible 43 years, until the vendor acquired it in 2023. The odometer currently reads 35,750 miles and, overall, the vendor describes it as being in ‘excellent’ condition throughout.
The original Lotus Cortina arrived in 1963. It was inspired by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, who commissioned a twin-cam version of the Ford Kent engine for motorsport. Ford asked Chapman if he would fit the engine to a number of saloons, again for motorsport homologation, and a deal was struck to create the Lotus Cortina. The original model was built by Lotus, but the improved MkII model switched to the main Ford production line in Dagenham. Instead of a specialist car, it was now an uprated version of the regular Cortina, with Lotus-honed engine and suspension. For this reason, Ford preferred to call it ‘Cortina Lotus’ rather than ‘Lotus Cortina’. Fascinatingly, this high-performance machine was even trialled by the police for use a fast patrol car.
