Examples of BMW’s handsome 633CSi rarely come to market these days, and certainly not in the condition of this attractive one from 1979, which has benefited from a full professional respray in the original shade of red within the last 12 months, following some minor remedial work to the sills. Within the same timeframe the electrics were checked and sorted, the brakes pads and wheel bearings attended to, and a full service carried out. Corrosion is a common problem with these beautifully-built cars, but the vendor declares the underside of ‘DMY 764T’ as being in ‘great condition, with just the odd evidence of light rust in places’. In summary, he presently classes the straight-six engine, automatic transmission, bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the nicely-patinated upholstery as ‘good’. The only known problems relate to the electrics of sunroof and N/S rear window. The car is now on offer complete with a Pioneer stereo unit, a vast array of invoices from such respected marque specialists as Munich Legends, old tax discs and MOTs, plus a current advisory-free certificate valid into June 2024.
The sleek, Paul Bracq-penned, four-seat 6 Series Coupe was introduced in 1976 as a replacement for the aging CS and CSL models. Code named E24, the newcomer borrowed heavily from the contemporary E12 and E28
5 Series saloons, and was of unitary, all steel construction. At launch, the range comprised two models –the 630CS and 633CSi; the bodies for which were manufactured by Karmann prior to production being taken in-house. Suspension was fully independent by MacPherson struts at the front and semi-trailing arms and coil springs at the rear, braking by ventilated discs all round, and steering by a ZF worm and roller system. There was the option of manual or automatic transmission. The 633CSi model was powered by a SOHC straight-six powerplant of 3210cc, the output of which was 197bhp – sufficient to power the sporting coupe to 60mph in 7.8 seconds and on to a top speed of c.134mph.
