If you’ve ever hankered after one of Monsieur Peugeot’s 205 GTis – and who hasn’t? – then we strongly suggest you take a peek at ‘H87 YFL’. Unlike so many that have been crashed or thrashed and passed through multiple hands, it is immaculate inside and out, having had just two keepers from new, who’ve amassed a mere 56,806 miles between them. The first owner was a lady primary school teacher who employed it for her daily commute and retained the car for 16 years. Tenure then passed to the vendor, who has always dry stored and exercised it when not in full use. It is self-evident that both parties have cherished the vehicle, and it comes complete with a large box file of paperwork that chronicles the related maintenance and repairs. The vendor informs us that the pocket rocket is ‘completely standard and never been involved in any kind of accident’. He presently classes the 1.6-litre engine, five-speed manual gearbox, hatchback bodywork, white paintwork and red/black cloth interior trim to all be in ‘excellent order’. He is now offering this remarkably unmolested GTi complete with factory-fitted sunroof (and wind deflector), radio/cassette, apparently unmarked Speedline alloy wheels shod with Dunlop tyres, and a current MOT valid until August 8. A rare opportunity for 205 GTi lovers everywhere.
Though a much-vaunted manufacturer, even Peugeot has never managed to recreate the magic of the 205 GTi, that was a hit out-of-the box and is universally regarded as one of the greatest hot hatches of all time. Launched in 1984, the rev-happy 1.6-litre version benefited from a revised cylinder head in 1987, that raised the power output from 104 to 115bhp. Visual differences between the three-door GTi and its less-sporting stablemates included meatier front and rear bumper valances, plastic wheelarches covering distinctive wider-rim alloy wheels, and a lower stance that emanated from shorter, stiffer springs. Good examples have long since been sought by collectors everywhere.
