September 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 86

1985 Robin Hood S7

Registration - B451 RKS

Chassis No. - SABTVR03054333036

M.O.T. - August 2023

Odometer - N/A

The black wings and nose cone of this purposeful-looking wide-bodied S7 kit car contrast nicely with its polished stainless steel tub. We understand the two-seater features Sierra running gear and that its 2.0-litre Ford Pinto engine benefits from a polished and ported cylinder head, fast road cam, quartet of motorcycle carburettors and a wrapped four-into-one exhaust manifold. ‘B451 RKS’ rides on Minilite-style alloy wheels and the effect of its black and grey interior trim is enlivened by a pair of red safety harnesses. The vendor presently classes the OHC engine and five-speed manual transmission as ‘excellent’, and the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. The car is now offered complete with roll-over bar, leather-rimmed steering wheel, dash-mounted rev counter and a fire extinguisher, plus a current MOT valid to May 27 next year. A lot of fun per pound.

Colin Chapman’s ubiquitous Lotus Seven was launched as long ago as 1957 yet the concept is, if anything, more popular today than it was then. When Lotus ceased Seven production in 1972/1973, Caterham acquired the manufacturing rights and have built cars to the original design ever since. However, such has always been the demand for affordable wind-in-the-hair machines that a number of other companies have successfully marketed look-alike models, among which was Robin Hood Engineering of Sherwood, Nottingham, whose stainless steel monocoque S7 model was manufactured between 1989 and 1999

In summary:

  • A well-presented example of a fun car
  • Features a wide body and inboard suspension
  • Powered by a tuned 2.0-litre Ford Pinto engine
