1931 Riley 14/6 Alpine Sports Saloon

Registration - VV 744

Chassis No. - 14L034

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 8,814

This splendid-looking (immediately) post-vintage Alpine features the very desirable half-panelled Weymann bodywork. It is among few survivors and even fewer that are currently roadworthy. For many years it was lovingly owned by the former secretary of the Riley Register, the late John Tew. A Riley aficionado and six-cylinder expert, he recovered the car from a blacksmith’s yard in Northampton during the 1980s. A comprehensive restoration ensued, that involved a bevy of experts over several years and was ultimately completed by his son-in-law. The coachwork refurbishment was carried out by Ron Laws of Nottingham, and the vendor informs us it ‘has held up very well indeed’. The correct L-Type six-cylinder engine was over-bored to 1723cc and drives through a correct ‘Silent 3rd’ manual gearbox to a 5.22:1 rear axle. Apparently all the instruments and electrical components are equally period correct, from the Rotax head and side lamps to the Rotax F-Type cut-out.

The Alpine is finished in black and white, is trimmed in blue leatherette and rides on blue-painted wire wheels. The vendor acquired it in September 2014, since when he’s contributed 2,500 miles of the post restoration total of 8,814, and has found the Riley to be ‘a pleasure to drive and very reliable’. He presently considers the coachwork, interior trim, engine and transmission to all be in ‘excellent’ condition and the paintwork to be ‘good’. He informs us that the 14/6 has been ‘regularly maintained during his tenure, and there are currently no known faults’. He is now offering this very handsome period motorcar for sale complete with large sunroof, opening windscreen, electric fan conversion, and a history file that includes photos of the restoration.

In summary:

  • The subject of a comprehensive earlier restoration
  • Only 8,814 miles accrued since the refurbishment
  • Features the desirable half-panelled Weymann bodywork
