November 2021 Classics Auction

Lot 97

1954 MG TF

Registration - PND 204

Chassis No. - HDP166453

M.O.T. - N/A

Odometer - 92,345

This lovely-looking 1250cc TF features a beige hood over cream paintwork that’s complemented by red leather interior trim, beige weather gear and silver-painted wire wheels. It was acquired from a deceased estate and has been treated to what the vendor describes as a ‘gentle restoration’, so retains its natural patina of age. As part of a collection of cars it has seen little use in recent times, but the MG has been started and the wheels turned on a regular basis. The vehicle is equipped with a quartet of rear view mirrors and chrome luggage rack, and is considered by the vendor to be ‘good’ in all major respects. The odometer currently registers a very credible total mileage of 92,345.

The first post-war MG was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1,250 cc OHV XPAG engine. It was superseded by the TD in 1950. Though visually similar to the earlier cars, the newcomer was built around a more modern chassis derived for the Y-Type saloon. The benefits included coil spring suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering and smaller 15-inch disc type road wheels. By the middle of 1950, a MKII TD was produced alongside the standard car. It featured a range of optional upgrades including: an engine of 8.0:1 compression ratio giving 57bhp, twin fuel pumps, revised dampers, higher final drive ratio etc, and it was this specification on which the TF of 1953 was based. Now highly sought after, the TF was in fact an interim model pending the arrival of the all new MGA two years later. Some 9,600 were produced.

In summary:

  • A fine-looking example of a sought after breed
  • The subject of a ‘gentle restoration’
  • Superb-looking red leather interior
