This wonderful 2003 Maserati Spyder is a fantastic example of an open-top supercar with a thrilling all-Italian 4.2-litre V8 engine and F1-style paddleshift transmission. Finished in sparkling Grigio Touring Silver with black electric folding roof and full black leather interior, the paintwork is described as “stunning” and the alloy wheels “immaculate” (the tyres are excellent too, with new rear tyres last year that have covered less than 2,000 miles). The vendor says that the history file is “incredible”, with virtually all invoices and related history since new, that shows a total expenditure on maintenance of over £46,000! In the last 18 months alone, £10,000 has been spent to get the car to a high standard, with new front and rear brake discs and pads, two engine pulley bearings, a complete handbrake replacement, new battery, complete new Larini exhaust and a full service – which included a gearbox oil change.
‘ME53RAC’ also had an engine bottom end rebuild at 54,700 miles, which cost £12,600. As a result, it drives extremely well, particularly as it has been garage-stored until recently. The vendor adds the clutch is only around 45% worn, and that windows, seats, roof and heated seats all work. “The only fault we have not dealt with is a stereo that doesn’t work.” But who needs a stereo, when you have a car equipped with a V8 engine directly related to the similarly-thrilling powerplant in the Ferrari F430 and Alfa Romeo 8C?
The charismatic Maserati 4200 GT and Spyder were descended from the earlier Maserati 3200 GT, which was sold between 1998 and 2002. The most exciting development came under the bonnet, with Maserati fitting a thrilling 4.2-litre V8 that produced 385bhp at a howling 7,000rpm. The F136 R V8 belonged to the Ferrari and Maserati F136 engine family, meaning it was closely related to the engine in both the Ferrari F430 and Ferrari 458 Italia. Supercar genealogy rarely comes more glittering.
