**NO RESERVE** An unrepeatable barn find opportunity

Registration - DG 7319

Chassis No. - L0375

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - N/A

Are you seeking a rewarding restoration project? If so, then look no further than this fascinating MG that was thought to have been destroyed but was recently unearthed in ‘barn find’ condition. It is a four-seat tourer that at some stage acquired a bespoke hardtop and rides on what appear to be Morris steel wheels as opposed to the wire MG ones with which it would have originally been fitted. The Triple-M Register has kindly confirmed that ‘DG 7319’ came off line on May 9, 1933 and was released to the distributor Imperial Motor Mart of Cheltenham, Glos. 20 days later, who duly sold the Magna to a J.L. Barlow of Bristol, for whom the car was first registered on August 19 the same year.

Now, 90 years later, the Magna is ready for a new lease of life. The club records show that the original livery matched green bodywork to green interior trim, but somewhere along the way the body has been resprayed in the combination of light over dark blue that’s matched to blue door cards and brown leather-covered seats. The car appears to be largely complete and we can confirm that the all-important chassis plate (No. L0375) numbers among the accompanying items. The straight-six powerplant features a block plaque dated 4/8/56 that confirms the unit to be a ‘Quality Conditioned Exchange Engine courtesy of The Chester Engineering Co. of Boughton, Chester. Accompanying the MG is a revealing file of paperwork that includes an early-style logbook and a 1964 letter from an F.A. Roads of Romford stating to a would-be purchaser ‘I have in mind £60 as a fair price to the right buyer’. Even in its current condition, one would expect this exciting project to fetch many times that amount when it goes under the hammer.

MG produced the L-Type Magna range for just the two years of 1933 and 1934. The chassis was a narrow development of that employed for the K-Type cars and was powered by a 1086cc version of the six-cylinder engine previously seen in the Wolseley Hornet and MG F-Type Magna. The so-called L2 was a two-seater while L1 versions such as the sale car were a four-seat proposition that, when new, were priced at £299.

In summary:

  • A splendid ‘barn find’ in need of a full restoration
  • Appears to be largely complete and comes with chassis plate
  • Being sold at No Reserve
