The Gold Cup – Classic, Performance & Supercar Auction

Lot 28

1978 MG Midget 1500
***NO RESERVE*** An honest and highly usable British sports car, complemented by Minilite-style alloy wheels

Registration – BNX 110T

Chassis No. – GAN6-213606G

M.O.T. – Exempt

Odometer – 98000 (replacement speedometer)

Few cars capture the uncomplicated appeal of the traditional British sports car quite like the MG Midget. Compact, lightweight and entertaining, the Midget remains one of the most accessible ways into classic open-top motoring, with excellent parts availability and an enthusiastic following.

This 1978 MG Midget 1500, registration ‘BNX 110T’, is a later example powered by the 1,493cc four-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox.

Finished in a vibrant shade of blue, the car presents as an honest and eminently usable example rather than an over-restored showpiece. Its appearance is complemented by black bumpers, Minilite-style alloy wheels and a black folding hood, while the photographs show the car with the roof lowered – arguably exactly how a Midget should be enjoyed.

The straightforward cabin retains the wonderfully simple character of the model, with black seats, an MG three-spoke steering wheel, traditional instrumentation and manual transmission. The photographs also show an aftermarket radio fitted beneath the dashboard.

Under the bonnet, the 1500cc four-cylinder engine remains presented in appropriately usable condition, with the engine bay displaying the sort of honest appearance one would expect from a classic that has been enjoyed rather than simply displayed.

The odometer reading is stated as 98,000 miles; however, we are informed that the speedometer has previously been replaced and consequently the displayed mileage should not be taken as a representation of the car’s total mileage. As a 1978 vehicle, ‘BNX 110T’ is M.O.T. exempt.

There is something particularly appealing about a classic car that can simply be bought and enjoyed, and this Midget appears to fit that brief nicely. Small enough to place confidently on a twisting country road, mechanically straightforward and supported by an enormous network of specialists and parts suppliers, the Midget remains a thoroughly enjoyable entry into classic-car ownership.

Offered here with no reserve, ‘BNX 110T’ represents an inviting opportunity to acquire one of Britain’s best-loved diminutive sports cars – roof down, four-speed gearbox in hand and the open road ahead.

  • Desirable later 1500cc MG Midget with four-speed manual transmission
  • Presented in vibrant blue with black interior, Minilite-style alloy wheels and folding black hood
  • Offered at no reserve and ready for its next custodian to enjoy
