The Gold Cup – Classic, Performance & Supercar Auction

Lot 53

2004 Ford Focus ST170
***NO RESERVE*** Track-prepared with roll cage and competition equipment

Registration – CK04 AVG

Chassis No. – WF0BXXGCDB4B04355

M.O.T. – NO

Odometer – 118,647

The original Focus ST170 occupies an increasingly important place in Ford's performance-car story. Sitting between the mainstream Focus range and the formidable Focus RS, the ST170 introduced the now-famous ST badge to the Focus and combined one of the finest front-wheel-drive chassis of its generation with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine and six-speed manual gearbox.

‘CK04 AVG’ takes that sporting character considerably further. Rather than being presented as a standard road-going ST170, this example has been purposefully prepared with track use in mind and offers an interesting proposition for somebody looking for an affordable fast Ford for track days, sprints or further competition development.

Finished in blue, the car retains the distinctive ST170 bodywork and multi-spoke alloy wheels, while its motorsport intentions are immediately apparent. Competition-style roundels carrying number 69 are fitted to the bodywork, together with towing points and various motorsport-related decals.

The transformation is more substantial inside. A roll cage is clearly visible through the cabin, together with a competition bucket seat mounted on Speedpro hardware, harness, OMP steering wheel with centre marker and fire extinguisher. Much of the unnecessary interior trim has been removed, giving the cabin the purposeful, functional atmosphere expected of a track-prepared car.

Of particular interest is the six-speed manual transmission, one of the defining features of the ST170 when new. The photographs show an extended gear lever arrangement, while the stripped-back cockpit places the major controls immediately to hand.

Under the bonnet sits Ford's 2.0-litre Duratec ST engine. In standard specification the ST170 produced approximately 170PS, using variable valve timing and a number of revisions over the regular Focus powerplant. This example also appears to feature a modified induction arrangement; prospective purchasers are encouraged to inspect the car to establish the full extent and specification of its mechanical modifications.

The Focus chassis earned considerable acclaim from the moment the first-generation model appeared, and the ST170 built upon those foundations with revised suspension, larger brakes and performance-focused engineering. It consequently provides an excellent starting point for a track-focused build.

Showing 118,647 miles and currently without an MOT, ‘CK04 AVG’ should be regarded as a modified, competition-orientated vehicle rather than a standard road car. Its precise competition eligibility, specification and suitability for any particular championship should be confirmed by the successful bidder before use.

For the enthusiast seeking an inexpensive entry into track days or club-level motorsport, this represents an intriguing opportunity. Much of the costly preparation appears already to have been undertaken, leaving its next custodian free to inspect, recommission and develop the car according to their intended use.

A purposeful track-prepared example of Ford's increasingly appreciated first-generation ST170, offered with NO RESERVE.

  • Purposefully prepared for track and competition use
  • Fitted with roll cage, competition seat, harness and OMP steering wheel
  • Desirable ST170 with 2.0-litre Duratec power and six-speed manual transmission
