The 996 generation represents one of the most significant chapters in the history of the Porsche 911. An entirely new body, water-cooled flat-six power and a substantially modernised cabin brought Porsche’s definitive sports car into a new era, while its rear-engined layout ensured that the essential character of the 911 remained very much intact.

This 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet is an especially appealing example thanks to its desirable combination of rear-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission. Powered by Porsche’s naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six, it provides the involvement of a manual gearbox together with the additional theatre of open-top motoring.

Finished in metallic grey with a black electrically operated convertible roof, the car presents as an attractive and refreshingly usable example. Five-spoke Porsche alloy wheels complement the understated lines of the 996, while the electrically operated hood allows the car to transform quickly from an accomplished long-distance 911 into a thoroughly enjoyable open sports car.

The cabin is trimmed predominantly in black leather and retains the familiar Porsche five-dial instrument arrangement, three-spoke steering wheel and, importantly, the six-speed manual gear lever. Electrically adjustable front seats and Porsche audio equipment further contribute to its everyday usability. There is some age and mileage-related wear visible within the cabin, particularly to the driver's seat and steering wheel, but this is an honest 911 that has clearly been enjoyed rather than simply stored away.

The vendor informs us that the Porsche has been in his ownership for nearly four years and has been maintained during that period by respected Porsche specialist Tech 9 Motorsport Ltd. He advises that no expense has been spared in maintaining the car, with recent expenditure including the fitment of a new radiator.

Importantly, this recent care is complemented by an extensive documented service history stretching back many years.

The accompanying service book records Porsche Centre Kendal attending to the car at 11,280 miles in October 2007 and again at 20,869 miles in October 2009. Porsche Centre Guildford subsequently maintained it at 32,023 miles in October 2011, followed by Porsche Centre Mid-Sussex at approximately 45,296 miles in 2013 and Porsche Service Centre Brooklands at 53,092 miles in September 2015.

The documented history continues with independent specialist maintenance, including entries from F.A. Donovan & Son of Sandbach at 55,826 miles in November 2017, 57,531 miles in July 2020 and 58,138 miles in May 2022. The accompanying records also document scheduled maintenance items including brake-fluid changes, spark-plug replacement, drive-belt inspection/replacement and airbag-system checks.

More recently, the history file contains documentation from Tech 9 Motorsport Ltd dated 25th August 2026 at 95,870 miles. The invoice records investigation of a lambda fault and notes that remedial work had been undertaken by Motorsport-Tech Ltd. Tech 9 subsequently checked the car and recorded that the lambda readings were within the correct parameters.

The 95,870 miles recorded on this very recent invoice also corresponds closely with the approximately 95,900 miles displayed when the Porsche was photographed, with the catalogue mileage rounded to 96,000 miles.

The 996 has become increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts as an important generation of the 911, and the specification of this particular car is arguably where much of the appeal lies. Its naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, while the Cabriolet body provides the opportunity to enjoy that engine with the roof lowered.

For prospective owners seeking a 911 to actually use, rather than one to hide away, there is plenty to recommend here. It has an extensive documented history, has been maintained by Tech 9 during the vendor’s nearly four-year ownership, has benefited from continued expenditure including a new radiator, and carries an M.O.T. through to August 2027.

An honest, well-documented and highly usable example of the 996 Carrera, made all the more desirable by its rear-wheel-drive Carrera 2 specification, naturally aspirated 3.6-litre engine and six-speed manual transmission.
