November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 10

1937 Ford Model Y Two-Door Saloon

Registration - BNM 367

Chassis No. - 190601

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 18,155

The traditional black bodywork of this ‘long radiator’ Model Y is paired with red interior trim and contrasts nicely with the cream finish of the car’s wire wheels. The Ford has clearly been in receipt of ongoing attention, most recently in the form an engine repaint. The roof has also received some refurbishment and is now sound and smart on the exterior and only requires a new headlining to complete the job. The car is being offered complete with owner’s manual and history file containing receipts for work carried out.

The first Ford sold in the UK was the Model A. It proved popular and by 1911 over 400 US-built examples of the marque were being purchased per annum from premises in London’s Shaftsbury Avenue. A disused carriage works at Trafford Park Manchester was then acquired, from where Model Ts were assembled for the ensuing 20 years. The famous Dagenham plant came into being in 1931, the first car product of which was the Model Y. UK production ran from 1932 to 1937, during which some 175,000 examples were built. The Y was powered by a 933cc side-valve engine that endowed the Ford with a top speed of c.60mph and 32mpg. The model was offered in Two or Four-Door guise, and in base specification was the only saloon that could be purchased for the princely sum of £100.

In summary:

  • A generally tidy ‘long radiator’ example
  • Recently treated to an engine repaint
  • Comes complete with instruction manual and history file
