  Lot 10

1956 Ford Consul
Recently restored to a very high standard

Registration - RDA 471

Chassis No. - E0TA-224981

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 36,148

Now listen up all you fans of ‘50s Fords, as here’s an opportunity that may never arise again. Why? Because at the last count just 48 MK1 Consuls were currently licensed for UK use, and this one is a genuine 36,000-mile example that’s recently been restored to superb condition throughout. Affectionately known to the vendor and his wife as ‘Matilda’, ‘RDA 471’ was one of the last of the MK1 line, and first registered to a gentleman from Wolverhampton on January 1, 1956. Its final MOT was issued 31 years later, by which time the Ford had travelled 34,341 miles. It then spent 25 years slumbering at a Ford main dealer in Stafford, only venturing out for the occasional wedding or TV appearance, before joining the private collection of another motor dealer. The vendor therefore had the distinction of becoming the car’s second private keeper in 58 years when he acquired it in 2014. Never rebuilt and still featuring the interior it was born with, the Consul was treated to a sympathetic restoration in 2016, courtesy of The Classic Mechanic Ltd of Macclesfield, and is now considered by the vendor to have ‘excellent’ 1508cc engine, three-speed column-change gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery. Finished in Winchester Blue and trimmed in pale blue vinyl, it is now offered complete with a comprehensive history file containing photos of the restoration, plaques relating to some of the many classic shows it’s attended, a well-thumbed Haynes workshop manual and an instruction book. A potentially great addition to any classic collection.

Launched at the 1950 London Motor Show, the four-cylinder MK1 Consul and its six-cylinder Zephyr sibling were the first British Fords to feature monocoque construction and the first UK-manufactured cars to employ the now commonplace MacPherson strut deign of front suspension.

In summary:

  • A stunning original example recently treated to a sympathetic restoration
  • Just 36,486 miles and two private owners from new
  • One of the last of the now very rare MK1 models
