February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 10

1988 BMW 318i

Registration - E87 DSA

Chassis No. - WBAAJ620803350926

M.O.T. - February 2023

Odometer - 67,050

At a glance, you’d never believe that ‘E87 DSA’ was 34 years old. Finished in metallic bronze and trimmed in beige cloth it has clearly been treated with great respect by its six keepers to date, who between them have amassed a total of just 67,050 miles - ie under 2,000 miles a year. This delightfully original BMW rides on period correct BBS alloy wheels, and features a factory-fitted sunroof and electrically controlled windows and mirrors. The vendor presently considers the interior to be in ‘excellent’ condition and grades the four-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, four-door bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’. He has recently had the car serviced and MOT’d (the certificate is valid into February next year), and is now offering it complete with a full service history, original book pack, tool/car kit, pair of keys, and even its original John Clark window sticker and number plates.

The second generation 3 Series, the E30, took to the roads in 1982. It had a far better drag coefficient than its predecessor (down from 0.46 to 0.38), and offered more space from slightly reduced overall dimensions as well as a reduction in weight. During its 10-year production run it could be purchased in four body styles, namely, two and four-door saloon, five-door Touring (ie estate) and two-door convertible. The engines ranged from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit (316i) to a 2.7-litre six-cylinder one (325i). That of the 318i of 1998 was a straight-four powerplant of 134bhp. Suspension was independent all-round by MacPherson struts, lower wishbones and coil springs at the front, and semi-trailing arms and coil springs at the rear. Steering was by rack and pinion.

In summary:

  • A wonderfully original four-door example of the much-vaunted E30 3 Series
  • Features automatic transmission and factory-fitted sunroof
  • Full service history and just 67,050 miles from new
