The Buick Riviera is one of the great names of American motoring, having first appeared in the early 1960s as Buick’s answer to the increasingly important personal luxury car market. By the time this seventh-generation example was produced, the Riviera had evolved into a very different proposition, combining traditional American comfort with the increasingly sophisticated electronics and styling of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Although catalogued as a 2005 registration, the chassis number identifies this example as a 1991 model-year Buick Riviera. It was subsequently imported to the UK and registered here as ‘H606 EGU’.

Finished in a wonderfully period two-tone combination of deep burgundy over a contrasting lower body colour, the Riviera retains the long bonnet, formal roofline and substantial proportions associated with American personal luxury coupés of the era. Under the bonnet sits Buick’s 3.8-litre 3800 V6 with Tuned Port Injection, driving through an automatic transmission. The 3800 became one of General Motors’ best-known engines, and in the Riviera its purpose was very much effortless progress rather than outright sporting performance.
