November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 102

1993 BMW 520i

Registration - K386 BWL

Chassis No. - WBAHB52080BC10311

M.O.T - November 2022

Odometer - 69,648

BMW’s 5 Series cars have so often been the mid-sized saloons by which all other vehicles from the same class are judged, and the E34 models of 1987 to 1996 was no exception. Of notably high quality, if treated with due respect they last and last, and that is clearly the story surrounding this 520i. According to Experian Autocheck, this pristine example has had just one previous keeper, and it is understood to have travelled no more 67,000 miles in its 28-year lifespan. The proud vendor presently grades the six-cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission, and blue textile interior as ‘excellent’, and the four-door bodywork, and white paintwork as ‘good’. Apparently, ‘K386 BWL’ has recently undergone a full programme of work to restore it to optimum condition, and it recently completed a 300-mile non-stop motorway journey without missing a beat. The vendor volunteers that the door cards would benefit from regluing, but feels that with only a small amount of work the car could be elevated to concours level. He is now offering this decidedly special BMW complete with a Pioneer radio/cassette system, full set of original tools, and a current MOT valid to November 9 next year.

The design of the E34 BMW was very much based on the existing E32 7 Series model, with much attention being paid to the aerodynamics, which resulted in a drag coefficient of just 0.30. The engine that powered the 1993 version of the 520i was a smooth flowing DOHC in-line straight-six unit of 148bhp. The 520i version of the E34 was second only to the 525i in terms of popularity, with no less than 426,971 being sold worldwide.

In summary:

  • An exceptional example of a much admired model
  • Seemingly just 67,000 miles and two owners from new
  • MOT’d into November next year
