An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 104

1989 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6
The subject of much recent expenditure *** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - F64 RYP

Chassis No. - VF320CD6201866991

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 130,540

Thirty-nine years on from its debut, plaudits for the apparently immortal 205 GTi have yet to wane – it really is one of the great cars of all time. This particular smartly presented 1.6-engined example was recently the subject of a comprehensive programme of refurbishment during which the engine was apparently treated to a new cam belt, water pump, drive pulleys and hoses, together with a fresh clutch and battery. The previously red body was resprayed in white and the 1.9 model Falken shod alloy wheels it rides on were re-powder coated, while the interior was reupholstered in black leather. The vendor, who’s owned the little Peugeot since 2008, now classes the hatchback bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the engine, five-speed manual gearbox and interior trim as ‘good’. He is now offering ‘E64 RYP’ complete with factory-fitted glass sunroof, stereo system and a current MOT certificate that’s valid to February 2 next year. The odometer currently registers a total of 130,540 miles.

Though a much-vaunted manufacturer, even Peugeot has never managed to recreate the magic of the 205 GTi, that was a hit out-of-the box and is universally regarded as one of the greatest all hot hatches. Launched in 1984, the rev-happy 1.6-litre version benefited from a revised cylinder head in 1987, that raised the power output from 104 to 115bhp – sufficient output for a 0-60mph time of c.8.8 seconds and a top speed of over 120mph. Visual differences between the three-door GTi and its less-sporting stablemates included meatier front and rear bumper valances, plastic wheelarches covering distinctive wider-rim alloy wheels, and a lower stance that emanated from shorter, stiffer springs. Good examples have long since been sought by collectors everywhere.

In summary:

  • A very well presented 1.6-engined example from 1989
  • The subject of considerable recent refurbishment
  • 130,540 miles and 10 keepers over 34 years
