November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 105

1953 Austin A30
Rare two door model that has been in regular use by the current owner.

Registration - 198 XVS

Chassis No. - 064C90121901

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 13,891

Unlike many A30s that have long since lost the fight against wet winters and salted British roads, this very pretty two-door example has spent its life in the warm dry climate of South Africa. Apparently the subject of an older restoration, it is said to be in ‘great’ overall condition. The vendor regards the blue bodywork, blue interior trim, 803cc A Series engine and four-speed manual gearbox as all being in ‘good’ condition, and we understand the baby Austin ‘starts, drives and runs absolutely fine’. The nicely patinated seats are original and the car even retains its semaphore arms, though flashing indicators have very sensibly been installed in deference to modern traffic. This adorable British classic is now being sold complete with a couple of ancillary instruments, spare wheel, jack, hand pump and other tools. Easy to drive and store, the car represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a cheap to buy, cheap to run characterful British classic, or the perfect basis for an affordable competition car.

Launched at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show as the ‘New Austin Seven’, Austin’s A30 was created as a direct competitor to the already very successful Morris Minor. It was the first car of monocoque construction to be produced by Austin and initially only offered in four-door guise – the two-door version followed in 1953, with the van and Countryman estate variants coming on stream another year later. When unveiled, the newcomer was priced at £507, deliberately undercutting the Minor by £62. The model range was superseded by the A35 in 1956, by when 223,264 examples had been produced.

In summary:

  • Benefits form having spent its whole life in the warm, dry climate of South Africa
  • The subject of an older restoration
  • On the button and complete with spare wheel, jack and tools
