An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 105

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider

Registration - G952 ECF

Chassis No. - VF1C4050502369087

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 102,920

It is believed that only c.30 Raiders remain in the UK, so each one is pretty special, but ‘G952 ECF’ is arguably more than most due to it having been substantially but discreetly modified throughout. The myriad changes include: uprated engine (170bhp), suspension and brakes; bespoke turbo, radiator and intercooler; stainless steel exhaust system; and Oz Racing alloy wheels shod with Toyo Proxes tyres. However, despite the stunning specification, it’s important to note that the Renault

has never been subjected to track use.

The vendor is the sixth owner of this pocket rocket, which he acquired some 2½ years ago. He presently classes its turbo engine, five-speed manual gearbox, three-door bodywork, special edition blue paintwork and grey cloth upholstery as all being in ‘good’ condition, and is selling the car complete with boost gauge and Raider logoed floor mats, plus a massive history file containing £22,000 worth of invoices, a rolling road print out, and current MOT valid until February 6 next year. All the original parts removed from the car are also included in the lot.

The GT Turbo version of the second generation Renault R5 was introduced to an eager market in 1985. Its 1397cc engine was force fed by a Garrett T2 turbocharger, which resulted in a healthy output of 113bhp. Thanks to the lightness of the body, this equated to an excellent power to weight ratio – sufficient in fact to allow the nimble hatchback to sprint to 60mph in as little as 7.5 seconds. The model differed from the standard offering in numerous ways, including having: an oil cooler, four-link rear suspension, a lower ride height, wider track, disc brakes all-round (ventilated on the front), quicker steering, aerodynamic 5.5inch alloy wheels, and side skirts. A phase II version ensued in 1987, a rally prepared example of which remains the only Group N car ever to achieve overall victory in a round of the World Rally Championship. The interior of the standard GT was upgraded in 1989, and in 1990 the special edition Raider model was introduced, which featured a unique interior, different wheels and was only available in Sport Blue (paint code 449).

In summary:

  • A substantially modified example with 170bhp on tap
  • History file contains £22,000 of invoices and a current MOT
  • Believed to be one of only c.30 Raiders remaining in the UK
