An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 106

1989 Vauxhall Astra GTE 16V
A well-presented example complete with the registration 'F16 GTE'

Registration - F16 GTE

Chassis No. - W0L000043K2523515

M.O.T. - May 2023

Odometer - 74,324

This very well-presented 16V GTE combines white bodywork with predominantly grey cloth interior trim, all of which appears to be in very good order. First registered in February 1989, the car is understood to have had seven keepers to date, the most recent of whom acquired the Vauxhall in 2012. Since his purchase he’s treated it to fresh rubber and plastic trims all round, as well as a new carpet and headlining, and retrimmed door cards. The steering rack has been replaced too, as have the locks, which are now all operated by the same Vauxhall-supplied key. The performance of the ‘Red Top’ engine has also been improved courtesy of a Kent performance camshaft and Irmscher exhaust system, and the GTE rides on a set of suitable quality Yokohama tyres. The enthusiast vendor is now offering the sporty Astra complete with: glass sunroof; headlamp washers; Alpine stereo head unit and 12-disc boot-mounted auto-changer; GTE mats and a history file containing invoices and a selection of old MOTs. The model-appropriate registration number ‘F16 GTE’ also forms part of the lot.

The Mark 2 Astra GTE made its debut in October 1984 with a 1.8-litre engine, but this was quickly supplanted by a 2-litre unit. However, it was the twin-cam ‘Red Top’ version of the powerplant installed from 1988 onwards that excited the motoring media and buyers alike, its output of 156bhp being sufficient to rival the performance of the equivalent Fords that had hitherto ruled the roost. Indeed, so admired was the engine that it quickly became a go-to unit for race car and special builders alike. The second generation Astra reigned until 1991, when it was supplanted by the MK3 model.

In summary;

  • A well-presented example complete with the registration ‘F16 GTE’
  • Treated to a no-expense-spared tidy-up by the vendor
  • Equipped with performance camshaft and exhaust system
