November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 108

1963 MGB Roadster
Superbly restored and very impressively presented.

Registration - 593 JGT

Chassis No. - GHN/3/9942

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 25,671

This very smart early roadster retains its original three-bearing engine and Banjo rear axle, but at some stage seems to have been rebuilt into a slightly later bodyshell, and therefore no longer features the ‘pull handle’ doors it would have originally featured. It benefits from having had a major body restoration by Mike Rolls MG of Gillingham, Dorset in 1996 and a bare metal respray as recently as this year. The fresh Iris Blue paintwork is complemented by a black hood, blue-piped black leather interior trim, recently installed black carpets, and silver-painted wire wheels. The car’s various upgrades include: Oselli unleaded cylinder head, an alarm/immobiliser/tracker, LED headlight conversion, Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel, chromed luggage rack, locking fuel cap, and a pair of auxiliary driving lights. The engine was last serviced in 2017, at which time the venerable MG was also treated to four new tyres and the replacement of its dynamo and control box. This attractive five-owner, home market B is now offered complete with photographic proof of the restoration and respray, a pair of keys and the pre-suffix registration ‘593 JGT’.

Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Braking was by discs at the front and drums at the rear. At launch, the model was powered by a three-bearing version of the 1,798cc B-Series engine that produced 95bhp at 5,400rpm.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented early home market example of Britain’s favourite sports car
  • The subject of an earlier restoration and recent respray
  • Benefits from a number of upgrades including an Oselli unleaded cylinder head conversion
