The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 109

1977 MGB Roadster

Registration - RAX 858R

Chassis No. - GHN5-429143G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 54,669

This pretty rubber-bumpered MGB was recently rescued from the garage of its late owner, where it had apparently lain unused since 1994. Nevertheless, the vendor found the roadster to be in ‘excellent, solid condition underneath and its body to have equally good panel gaps and only needing minor attention to the paintwork around the hood studs and boot lid’. Despite having had 16 keepers to date, he says the MG’s clearly ‘been well cared for’ and has now been further improved by the provision of: a polished, ported cylinder head converted to run on unleaded fuel; electronic ignition; and new propshaft, windscreen, electronic ignition system, hood, hood cover and carpets. ‘RAX 858R’ is finished in Sandglow (an eye-catching mix of gold and beige), trimmed in red-piped cream leather and rides on period correct alloy wheels. The vendor informs us that the car ‘drives superbly with good oil pressure’ and that the desirable overdrive is ‘in full working order’. He currently rates the bodywork, engine and transmission as ‘excellent’ and the paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’, and is now offering the car complete with: Moto-Lita leather-covered steering wheel, alloy rocker cover, period torpedo-style wing mirrors and Heritage Certificate. The odometer stands at a credible but unwarranted 54,669 total miles.

The MGB was steadily updated during its 18-year reign and with the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in its history occurred two years’ later, when steel reinforced rubber bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. By the time roadster production ceased in October 1980, a total of 399,070 are said to have been produced.

In summary:

  • A well-appointed, and apparently very solid example
  • Recently treated to many new parts
  • Comes complete with Heritage Certificate
