November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 109

1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL
Rare Zender period body kit.

Registration - HVW 982T

Chassis No. - 10704422044597

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 90,852

This distinctive example of Mercedes’ elegant R107 SL model features metallic bronze paintwork that’s perfectly complemented by the car’s two-tone chestnut and cream leather interior trim. The resulting late ‘70s vibe is further enhanced by a rare Zender period body kit, complete with rear spoiler, side skirts and body-coloured bumpers, and an equally period Pioneer radio-cassette player. ‘HVW 982T’ boasts the traditional Fuchs Baroque ‘Mexican hat’ alloy wheels and comes with the optional hardtop (which the vendor assures us in in ‘good’ condition) and factory-fitted rear seats. The vendor also states that the car runs ‘very soundly’ and that its 222bhp 4.5-litre V8 engine and automatic transmission are both in ‘excellent’ order. One of the soft-top’s rear quarter panes is apparently in need of attention and the vendor now classes the paintwork as being in ‘below average’ condition. The big Benz currently indicates an unwarranted but totally credible total mileage of 90,852, very little of which has been added in the last few years.

The third generation SL (R107) was launched in 1971. It featured a two-door monocoque bodyshell with independent suspension all round – double wishbones, coil springs and anti-roll bar at the front and semi-trailing arms, coil springs and anti-roll bar at the rear. The power assisted steering was Daimler-Benz’s own recirculating ball system. Braking was by discs all round – ventilated on the front. Over its 17-year reign, the R107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines. The 450 SL option was available from 1973 to 1980, the V8 engine of which produced some 222bhp at 5,000rpm and 278 lb ft of torque at 3,000rpm - sufficient to endow the model with effortless acceleration and a top speed of 135 mph.

In summary:

  • An unusual and distinctive example of Mercedes’ iconic sports car
  • Rare period Zender body kit and two-tone leather interior
  • Complete with optional hard top and rear seats
