November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 11

1953 MG TD

Registration - HBK 896

Chassis No.- TD26143

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 120,000

The condition in which this delightful TD is presented might lead you to believe it’s either led a quiet existence or been the subject of a top to toe restoration. In fact, neither scenario describes the life of ‘HBK 896’. It was first registered in 1953 to a Leonard Snook of Southsea and, aside of spells in Somerset, Bedfordshire and, most recently, Shropshire, it apparently spent a number of years in South Africa. The vendor purchased the car from Thornfalcon Classics of Taunton back in 2014, since when the wiring has been refurbished, the fit of the existing hood and sidescreens improved, the radiator overhauled and the ongoing programme of servicing and maintenance continued. Interestingly, the modern-looking Silver Streak Grey paintwork is the original colour, and the earliest of MG’s metallic options. The contrasting maroon interior trim, hood and tonneau cover also match the original livery. Indeed, despite having 120,000 miles under its belt, the TD is remarkably original and still sports the engine, chassis, woodwork, bodywork, wheels and instruments it left Abingdon with 69 years ago, not to mention the heater that was an optional extra. It is now offered complete with 4.55:1 final drive, alloy cylinder head, chrome luggage rack, quartet of auxiliary lights, original buff logbook, owner’s and workshop manuals, lubrication chart, collection of receipts and past MOT certificates, plus plenty of history.

Though visually quite similar to the earlier T Series cars, the TD was built around a more modern chassis – the one derived for the Y-Type saloon. The benefits included coil spring suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15in road wheels and the option of LHD. Some 30,000 TDs had been produced by the time the model gave way to the TF in 1953, all but around 1,600 or so of which were exported – some 23,500 went to the USA alone.

In summary:

• A very attractive example with interesting history

• Ample proof of ongoing maintenance and refurbishment

• Excellent spec. includes full weather equipment and heater
