Clearly the beneficiary of a quality restoration, ‘HVS 883’ is a visual feast when compared with the tin boxes that are standard fare in today’s SUV-clogged streets. Its resplendent bright red bodywork is teamed with a sumptuous oxblood-coloured hide interior and highly-polished chrome wire wheels. Less self-evident are the Coopercraft brake modifications and the Kenlowe electric fan, while a Sony CD player plays through a pair of rear-mounted speakers and the driver’s view of the following traffic is enhanced by a pair of quarterlight mirrors. The vendor informs us that the XK ‘runs and drives beautifully’ and he has no hesitation in declaring the 3.4-litre engine, four-speed manual gearbox, fixed head bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ shape, and is now offering this handsome six-owner Jaguar complete with a selection of invoices and other items of history.
By the time the XK150 was launched in May 1957, Jaguar had already won Le Mans four times - what better platform on which to unveil a new model? Though the newcomer was a logical progression of the XK140, subtle changes to the bodywork endowed this final iteration of the original XK line with a distinctly more contemporary air and generously proportioned cabin - they included the replacement of the split windscreen with a single sweep of toughened glass, a taller waistline and notably slimmer doors. It benefited from the adoption of four-wheel disc brakes, and could be had with a choice of 3.4-litre or 3.8-litre DOHC straight-six engines allied to either four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. The model was only in production for four years, and the total number of home market Fixed Head Coupes versions has been estimated at just 1,205.
