Registration – PAO 577P
Chassis No. – SA29598
M.O.T. – Exempt
Odometer – 81,035
Offered at No Reserve, this 1976 Ford Escort Mk2 was imported into the UK in 2020 and, since being registered here, has had just two keepers. A 1600cc four-door GL saloon, the vendor has owned it for four years and reports it drives well. It is finished in a bold shade of yellow, and has a period vinyl roof. This is complemented by a burgundy vinyl interior, providing the period 1970s look. The vendor reports the bodywork as being in ‘average’ condition, but the restoration required is light. The interior, they say, is in ‘good’ condition, and the car comes with lots of receipts as part of its history. The odometer reads 81,035 miles and, as a 1976 car, it is both tax and MOT exempt.
‘PAO577P’ was originally an automatic, but has been converted to a manual. It runs a desirable Tran-X straight-cut gearbox, that is said to have covered around 10,000 miles, and comes complete with a brand-new clutch. Because it was originally an auto, the Escort came from the factory with the desirable ‘big tunnel’ transmission tunnel. Other upgrades include electronic ignition, Gaz Gold adjustable suspension, Bilstein front legs, one-inch lowering blocks, a Group 4 steering knuckle and a full 1600 Sport exhaust system. It also has RS1600 steel wheels with new Toyo Proxes tyres. Adding to its distinctive appearance is a conversion from square headlights to circular, and it has a period-correct front grille.
The Ford Escort Mk2 arrived in early 1975, combining a more contemporary appearance outside and in with mechanical components floorpan and core structure from the much-loved Mk1 model. It was, however, thoroughly evolved and even better to drive – with performance car enthusiasts soon discovering it was an even better competition car. A legend in rallying, the Mk2 Escort remains much in demand even today, with a thriving community, plentiful specialist support and an endless supply of components to make one into whatever car you may wish.
