March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 11

1997 Rover Mini Cooper

Registration - R440 SJF

Chassis No. - SAXXNNAZEBD137474

M.O.T. - June 2023

Odometer - 47,926

It is hard not to smile at the sight of a classic Mini, and ‘R440 SJF’ has all the appropriate ingredients. Its white over orange paintwork is complemented by white bonnet stripes and mirror backs, plus tidy, period-correct Minilite-style alloy wheels shod with recently-added Sailwin Polaris tyres. It retains its original pair of auxiliary driving lights and the black and grey interior trim appears to be equally original. Now in its 26th year, and with an indicated 47,926 miles behind it, the little Rover has recently had £3,500 invested in a new alternator, auxiliary drive belt, pair of rear dampers, replacement front discs and pads, plus a full service and the aforementioned tyres. The bodywork does show a few signs of corrosion, as do the headlamp bezels, while the rear bumper is dented and the finish of the wooden facia has deteriorated with time, but there is plenty of affordable fun on offer here. The Mini comes complete with JVC radio/CD player and a current MOT valid until June 7.

The Mini’s association with the Cooper Car Company of F1 fame was formed in 1961, and for the next 10 years or so all performance versions of the little car bore the Cooper badge. Their place in history was sealed with outright victory in the Monte Carlo rallies of 1964, 1965, 1966 (from which the team was subsequently erroneously disqualified) and 1967. Many other rally and race successes were accrued before the relationship was shelved in the early 1970s. But you can’t keep a good name down, and it reappeared under Rover’s control almost 20 years later. The initial offering was actually a touch slower than the best of the ‘60s cars, but proved sufficiently popular that, from 1992, the Cooper Minis were fitted with a punchier, fuel-injected version of the 1275cc engine more worthy of the badge.

In summary:

  • A seemingly honest example currently displaying 47,926 miles
  • Has recently benefited from £3,500-worth of parts and service
  • Comes complete with JVC radio/CD and MOT to June
