November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 110

1989 Jaguar XJS Convertible

Registration - LKZ 7659

Chassis No. - SAJJNADW3DA154866

M.O.T. - May 2022

Odometer - 60,632

There are few better ‘wind-in-the-hair’ drives than a V12 XJ-S convertible on a nice sunny day. This particular seven owner example apparently stood unused for a number of years, during which the service records were mislaid. However, in recent times it has been treated to: a second-hand replacement engine (courtesy of West Riding Jaguar); upgraded inner front wings; a reconditioned starter; and a brand new hood. The vendor informs us that ‘LKZ 7659’ is ‘in mechanically good condition and drives well with a nice smooth engine. He, however, volunteers that there are minor problems requiring attention – eg the electric windows are presently non-operational. Finished in red and trimmed in cream hide, this charismatic open-topped cat is being sold complete with a selection of invoices for work carried out, related photos, and a current MOT valid to May 5 next year. If you were wondering how to hit the roads in spring 2022, this could be your answer.

The XJ-S (later the XJS) was Jaguar’s replacement for the iconic E-Type, though totally different in character – while the E-Type was an uncompromising sports car of racing heritage, the XJS was more of a grand touring car. The cabriolet version the XJ-SC, made its debut in 1983. This two-seat model was not a full convertible, having a non-removable centre section and fixed cant rails above the doors. The option of Jaguar’s established 5.3-litre V12 engine came in 1985 and in 1988 the Targa-type body was replaced with a fully convertible one, as per the sale car. Some 12,372 convertible XJ-Ss/XJSs were made before the model range was replaced by the XK8 in 1990.

In summary:

  • Displaying a relatively low, though unwarranted mileage of 60,632
  • Benefits from a used replacement engine and new hood
  • Comes complete with a selection of bills, photos and current MOT
