An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 110

1997 BMW Z3 2.8
Same family ownership for 22 years, Desirable manual with 12 months MOT

Registration - B19 ATG

Chassis No. - WBACJ32000LB86842

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 68,000

This fine-looking example of BMW’s ever-popular Z3 roadster has remained within the same family for 22 years, and in the vendor’s care for the last 15. It has always been garaged during his tenure and largely reserved for weekend trips. Its silver bodywork is complemented by black leather interior trim and the car rides on upgraded BMW alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero tyres. Though the black hood is apparently in ‘good condition’, ‘B19 ATG’ nevertheless comes with a brand new one as a spare, and we are told the electric roof mechanism ‘works well’. Overall the vendor presently grades the six-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission as ‘excellent’ and the two-door bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’. We gather that the total indicated mileage of 68,000 is backed by the MOTs that form part of the accompanying history file, along with the original book pack and a fresh MOT certificate. Included in the car’s current specification are a K&N air filter, carbon-effect console, radio/cassette and boot-mounted CD autochanger, and wind deflector.

Based on the E36 saloon platform, BMW’s characterful Z3 two-seater was in production from 1995 to 2002 and offered with a range of four and six-cylinder engines from 1.8 to 3.0-litres in capacity. The retro styling was the work of Joji Nagashima and, while the model utilised the semi-trailing arm rear suspension of the older E30 3 Series model, the newcomer broke new ground by becoming the first BMW to be solely manufactured outside Germany – ie in Greer, South Carolina, USA. The early 2.8-litre (2793cc) version that remained in production from 1997 to 1998, was powered by a 189bhp straight-six engine of sufficient performance to sprint the two-seater to 62mph in around 6.8 seconds and on to a top speed of c.135mph. In traditional BMW style, the engine was mounted up front, driving the rear wheels.

In summary:

  • A well-presented 68,000-mile example
  • Same family ownership for the last 22 years
  • Comes with upgraded wheels, spare hood and brand new battery
