November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 111

1920's 14Ft 6in Steam Launch
Gibbs & Thurston London

Built in the early ‘90s, this truly splendid steam boat has been recently restored and maintained to a very high standard. It is a replica of a Welsh launch of c.1855. Its heavy-duty GRP hull is dressed in mahogany from the laid decks to the curved combings, and perhaps unsurprisingly took suitably skilled craftsmen three years to complete. The specification includes six storage lockers below the seating, with additional fore and aft peak accommodation. The launch is powered by a John Quick boiler that’s approximately 20 years old and, as per the regulations, the new keeper will be required to have a check carried out and new certificate issued. A bow plaque reads ‘Northern Model Engineering 1994’, while that to the stern says ‘Limited Edition Steam Launch Hill No.9, Gibbs & Thurston, London’, and that on the engine reads ‘Limited Edition Steam Launches, Regatta Engine’. Also affixed to the engine is a plate recommending the use of Duckhams Oils.

The launch’s glittering woodwork is offset by an orange-striped red hull, orange-striped black funnel, and full complement of polished brass fittings. ‘Castella’ is a sight to behold and would make a wonderful addition to any classic car enthusiast’s collection of vehicles.

In summary:

  • A beautiful replica of a c.1855 steam launch
  • Built in the early ‘90s and recently restored
  • Powered by a c.20-year old John Quick boiler
