The Bolesworth Castle March 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 113

1979 Ford Transit Caravelle

Registration – PVL 989V

Chassis No. – CPVVWP673470

M.O.T. – Exempt

Odometer – 26,409

Originally sold in Portugal and having benefited from the warmer climate, this left-hand drive MkII Transit camper conversion has recently undergone significant mechanical work, including a fully rebuilt 2.0-litre Pinto engine that features electronic ignition, and has been converted to run on unleaded fuel. Further upgrades include a five-speed gearbox plus an enhanced cooling system. Fully insulated and soundproofed throughout, the interior features the original cab seats, which are in good condition, together with fold out double bed, ceiling lights, vinyl flooring and plenty of storage. The tidy conversion also includes a leisure battery with split charging system and 240 volt hook-up for on-site electrics. Beautifully presented in deep red with brown leather seats in the cabin, ‘PVL 989V’ comes with just 26,409 miles, though those are on a replacement engine. The powertrain is rated as ‘excellent’ by the vendor, and all other aspects described as ‘good’, indicating that this late 1970s camper is ready to enjoy without any further work.

Ford followed up its groundbreaking Mk1 Transit with the Mk2 version in 1978. While offering the same practicality as its predecessor, the Mk2 brought the Transit up to date with more modern front end styling, improved comfort and updated mechanicals. The longer front wings and bonnet meant servicing times were reduced as result of better access, while the extra space provided enough room for the Mk1’s V4 engine to be swapped for low compression versions of the superior 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre Pinto motor, with both also available with convenience-enhancing automatic transmission. While many thousands were made, the Mk2 Transit’s nature means survivors are rare and sought-after.

In sumary:

- Comprehensive mechanical work recently undertaken

- Sensibly upgraded for better driveability, usability and comfort

- Repainted in the past and still presents very well
