  Lot 114

1971 Volkswagen GP Spyder 718 RSK

Registration - GRK 580J

Chassis No. - 1112654395

M.O.T. - Expired

Odometer - 17

This handsome righthand drive replica of the all-conquering Porsche 718 RSK was built by Trace Engineering of Oldham, Lancashire in c.1988/1989. It comprises a GP Projects kit installed on a shortened 1971 Volkswagen Beetle chassis. Its 1641cc flat-four engine drives through a four-speed manual gearbox and the Spyder is finished in silver, as per the original race cars, and trimmed in a deep shade of red. ‘GRK 58J’ is very smartly presented and, among other things, features a deep-dished leather-rimmed steering wheel, torpedo style rear view mirrors, and full harness seat-belts. The car has resided in a private collection since purchased by the last keeper in December 2018 and has travelled a diminutive 17 miles since the date of its 2019 MOT. The vendor presently classes the fibreglass bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and transmission as all being in ‘good’ condition, and is offering the evocation complete with the original build plans from Trace Engineering and an assortment of receipts for parts purchased.

A development of the successful Porsche 550A, the 718 series of one and two-seat mid-engined racing cars was manufactured from 1957 to 1962. Developments of the model enjoyed class wins at Le Mans and overall victory in the Targa Florio and European Hillclimb Championship, and were piloted by such famous names as Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Dan Gurney and noted Porsche exponent Edgar Barth. Only c.16 of the original cars remain, and on the rare occasion they come to auction can command prices of anywhere between £1.7 million and £4 million.

In summary:

  • A fine-looking evocation of a much vaunted Porsche competition car
  • Has travelled just 17 miles since its 2019 MOT
  • Comes complete with original build plans and assortment of receipts
